Teaching and celebrating the seasons of Advent and Christmas have a strong tradition in our schools. Both liturgical seasons provide teachers with a great opportunity to bring together the two dimensions of Religious Education: Teaching people religion (the classroom teaching and learning of religion) and Teaching people to be religious (the religious life of the Catholic school).

Term four in schools is traditionally very busy, filled with graduations, exams and rites-of-passage. Sometimes teaching about the Church's liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas can be lost or even omitted as Advent only really begins in the last week of the term! Without context, the rich spiritual traditions of these important seasons can quickly become secularised and commercialised. A suggested approach could be to structure the last weeks of the school term to teach about Advent in week seven and start teaching about the season of Christmas in week eight. Teaching about these seasons can be incorporated into preparation for pageants and end of year prayer celebrations.
